AM Her is the prototype of the class of Variable stars known as Polars.   Magnetic non-disc CV's whose mass stream is randomly 'cut off' due to either large starspots or high magnetic fields in the donor star.   The light from these systems is highly polarised (hence Polars).  It's visual range is 12.0-16.0.
