Talks to Astronomical Societies
As you would expect, my presentations are all Variable Star related. I am continually being asked about observing faint objects from heavily light polluted skies, so two of my talks are constructed with this in mind.
Very few 'pretty pictures' in these presentations (talks on Variable Stars don't lend themselves to nice Astro pix), but lot's of tips on how to observe, light curves of various interesting stars and a couple of interesting animations to keep the audience awake! These talks are aimed at observers, although some 'armchair' astronomers might find some of the topics covered interesting. The 'Observing and Recording' presentation is definitely one for the active astronomer interested in making valuable Variable Star observations.
I will require the use of a digital projector for these talks.
I'm prepared to travel up to 150 miles to talk to Astronomical Societies, but this could be extended depending on circumstances.
Travelling expenses only!
Variable Stars: Observing & Recording
A basic talk on how to make, record & report a visual Variable Star observation, taking in the methods used by both the BAAVSS & AAVSO. Running time 60-70 minutes. Powerpoint Presentation.
Observing Variable Stars from Light Polluted Skies
This talk shows that serious and very valuable visual observations of Variable Stars (of various types) can be done from heavily light polluted city skies. If you can do it from Birmingham, you can do it from anywhere! Running time 60-70 minutes. Powerpoint Presentation
Visual Observations of Cataclysmic Variables
Basically a talk on Cataclysmic Variables, and what the visual observer can do. Includes observing from light polluted skies, types of object to observe, programmes to participate in and results obtained. 60-70 minutes. Powerpoint presentation.
Visual Observations of Variable Stars - Still a role to play
Does the humble visual observer still have a role to play in serious observing? This talk explains the various observing campaigns available to the dedicated visual observer of Variable Stars - from binocular observing to large reflectors. First given at the 2005 'The Astronomer' AGM. Running time 45 minutes. Powerpoint presentation.
Why Stars Vary!
A talk explaining why some stars vary in brightness - Eclipsing, Pulsating and Cataclysmic stars are covered. Powerpoint presentation. Running time 1h 20m.
OJ+287 - A Black Hole Detective Story
Background on one of the most enigmatic objects in the night sky, includes Pro-Am collaboration and analysis from amateur observtions since the 1990's. 45 minutes. Powerpoint presentation.
The Bradford Robotic Telescope
Some background on the history of the project, how to participate yourself, and show some of the images obtained with the BRT. 60 minutes. Powerpoint presentation.
